The colonial kitcbrns lasted in many country houses until about fifty year$ ago. Th ere are men and woraen stilt living who vividiy describe their glories. There was, besides, a rudely shaped "settee." The great wood fire burned its prodigious back log in tha chimney, and was never allowed to entirely die out Banked with ashes ia the evening. thsre was always supposed to be a spark to rekindle into new flames in the :-;orning. Not long ago a woman died v.üose pride it was to say that in the forty year= oL her married life the hearth fire once went out. If so diré a iri.iianee aróse a chiid was sent to the nearest neighbor wita a shovel to "borrow fire," and from tha glowing pine knot r:lighting was agaia possible. Along the walls were featoons of drioj frults and vegetables
