As the passenger steamer City o Toledo was returnlng to Toledo froi Put-in-Hay at 9 p. m. she encounteret the schooner Magdalen, in tow of th tug Butler, in the straight channe just off Presque Isle, near Toledo Signáis for passing1 were given and apparently nnderstood, for the tug at once sheered olf, but in doing so gave the schooner a inoinentum which earried her on a Ir.mk of mud iust as the steamer was abreast of her. She suddenly lid otf tlie bank and veered into the City of Toledo, her jibboom striking the steamer just foruard of her gangway, tearing away about 50 feet of her upper works. A panie reigned on board, the men like insane persons, but it was soon apparent that the ves.sel would not sink. beven people were badly injured and about 50 received cuts and bruises. .Mrs. John Sanderson, Annie Zimmerman, Jes.-ie Jaekson, Orace and Xellie Garwood, ill of Ada, O., were probably fatally mangled, wliile James Parley, and Mrs. John Miller, of Bucyrus, were the others most seriously injured. The force of the collision disabled the paddlewheel of the steamer and she was towed into the doek. The dama'je to the steamer was about 83,000. The only damage to the schooner was the carrying away of her jibboom and some of her canvas.
