Superintendent of Public Instruction Pattengill reports that in 65 of the 84 eounties of the state, there are regularly organized teachers' associations. There are in the state 350 districts vrhere f ree text books are supplied to the pupils. Reports from these districts almost without exception bommend the system. In the graded schools the enrollinent is 258,799; in ungraded schools, 210,200; in select schools, 44,842; teachers in the graded schools, 5,262; in ungraded schools, v"ti3; men in graded schools, 793; women, 4,654; men in ungraded schools, J,G8 1 ; women, 8,057; aggregate wages paid all teachers, 83,894,264. 19; average monthly wages of men in graded schools, 879.12; in ungraded schools, $31. AN; monthly wages of women in jraded schools, 843.24; in ungraded, $25.74; number of teachers holding normal certitieates, 498; whole number jf legally qualified teachers, 11,077; frame school houses, 5,987; brick 1,361; stone 74; estimated value of all school property, 810,584,399.
