The disaster was caused by the explosión of the boilers used to lurnish steam power and heat through the bxiilding-. The cause of the explosión is not known. but Engineer Thompson is severely condemned as a careless man and the opinión is freely given that he allovved the water to get too low. The building was owned by the Newberry estáte and their loss will be abrut 875,000, as the remuinder of the has been declared unsafe and will have to be torn down. The losses to the occupants is over 50,000. All carried tire insurance, but their policies do not cover loss by explosions so they are without protection unless they can recover damages from the Newberry estáte, whioh owned the boilers and employee! the engineer.
