At that time the total mileage of the railways of tb United States was a little more than 180,000 miles; and the increase during the yrsar was but a little overl per cent., the smallest since the organization of the commission. About 70 per cent of the aggregate amount of railway ptock paid no dividends during the year, and about 17 per cent of the tunded debt paid no interest.
