The Unitarian church devotcd last Sunday ovening to services in honor of Ex-Govcrnors Peleh and Ashley, who have died during the past year. Judgc Ni W. Cheever gave a short sketeh of Ex-Governors Felch's Ufo and work and hia connection vvith Michigan poli-1 tics. It was an interesting paper and was nighly onjoyed by all who heard it. The paper by .Tudgo W. D. Harriman, upon Ex-Gov. Ashley, was also listened to with great interest. We give below n brief extract from Mr. Harriman's paper, which will be especially interesting to our readers. "The sympathy of James M. Ashloy was the genuine thing - not an affectation, a hollow pretense, to keep himself ín fashion with cookoo9 who float with the popular tide. When the friends and disciples of .Tohn Brown - men who liad encouraged him to mako his raid upon Slavery at Harper's Ferry - had all deserted hini, and public opinión was hostile or silent, Mr. Ashley alone, amo'ng all the rren in the country, had the reckless and daring courage to go into the midst of the angry and excited peoplc of the south, and visit tho friendless and deserted old man in his prison at Charleston, -procured permission for the wife to visit her hu9band in prison, and when the tragedy was over. like another .Toseph of Aramathea he asked Tor, and procured tho body of the dead martyr, and caring for it gently and kindly, sent it to the noi'th where it now rests among the Adirondack hilis. Meeting the 1 en wife, he said, with tears streaming down his face, 'Dear Madam Virginia has huns your husband, but Virginia will some day erect a monument to his memory, and his name wiü live ainon g the martyrs of freedom and the ra ce when all the rest of us are f orgottoa.' 1 his act alune should endear the memory of James M. Ashiey to all 1 man, generous, Christian men and 1 men evcrywhere, and for all time."
