Miss Anna Richards, State Superintendent of the Y. W. C. T.U ,addressed tho Union at thia placo last Thursday. She said : "Sentiment is strong against liquor, and many would tliink it the height of impropriety to go to a saloon and take a drink, but the same persons will have i it stand upon their tables, and nevor ' Ihink of refusing the sparkling glas3 at banqueta or when a guest at the table of a friend. "To be sure, the pleasant surroundings in which the man of reQnemeut and wealth drinks nis wine are less degrading than the rough saloon, yet the drink has the same ill effect upon his body, the desire for liquor is cultivated, a habit acquired, and the health and moráis of the man who drinks regularly in his own or friend 's homo, are in just as much danger as are those of the man who drinks at the bar. "Every man ia responsible for his condition physically and morally. He may say it was through the influence of some one else, hut he had the power within himself to overeóme the evil iufluences, and if he will notexert hlmself to overcomo the temptations, he makes it all the harder for his children to resist temptation, by bequeathing to them a woaUer will and constitution than is their right to inhcrjt. "Wero the drinker himself the only oue to suffer, that would be reason enough for him to choose the less daugerous. But his fatnily - which is usually large- must endure the hardship9. "Ia the city of Ann Arbor there is not a place down town wherc a persp,n can get a drink Qf cokl water, unless he be fortúnate enough to have friends ín some of the stores, who keep a tank for their cuvu uso. VVhy could not a drinking fountain be placed on tbe court house square near the cool spring supply that ht3 been so, thoiightfully placed for horses? "Will not lije city Council looH into this matter, and not oblige inen tp go to a saloon fqr a, cqld c}rir(k this hot weatherí" Next Thursday beiqg tile fifth if) thia month, the W. C. T. U. will hold their regular meeting at 3 p. m. The ladies promise theuaselves a little treat in the shape of something cool and refreshing.
