British Defeat Tribesmen
The British forces under Oen. Sir Williuin Lockhart captured the Sempaha pass on tlie Afghanistan border of India. Gen. Gaselee, in cominand of the Second brigade, led tlie advanee upon the tribesmen's position, which was very strong1 and the approaehes to it were greatly exposed. The pass was fourid to be a series of steep rises afYordinf muoh dead grouud to an attacking- party. The troops, under cover of a mountam battery, aptured hight after hight and finally the fourth Gurkhas and tlie Vost Surreymen arrived at the summit tosrether.
