It is stated on good authority that Premier Sagasta's reply to U. S. Minister Woodford's note is eminontly aa.tr isfactory to the ü. 8. government. In it the Spanish ministry pledges itself to correct the abuses oí power in Cuba, which were the subject of so much complaint during the Weyler administration, and gives assurance of its frièndly feeling toward the American people. It accepts our good offices in its efforts to restore peace in Cuba, and in a períectly respectful and frièndly spirit asks this government as far a6 possible to restrain the ïnsurgent sympathizers in the United States f rom giving material aid to the enemies of Spain in Cuba. The reply has made a farorable impression upon Preident McKinley. It is likely that one of the features of his forthcoming message will be a discussion of the Cuban situation, from which it vrill appear that there is nothinff in the situation to justify present interference on the part of the United SUtea.
