A narcotics course will be introduced soon by Sheriff Douglas J. Harvey who hopes it will be incorporated into every school system in Washtenaw County. The course features taped interviews of narcotics addicts, attorneys, drug "pushers " pólice officers and judges. It also incíudes a series of colored slides 20 pamphlets which explain the effect of all known drugs and a "master instruction book to be used by an instructor. "We're really not interested in having our officers . . . or any pólice officer . teach this course," Sheriff Harvey said. 1 "We'd like school boards throughout the I county to find in their systems, a faculty 1 member willing to take over this course i and teach it as a regular part of social studies or a related field." Media Engineering Corp. of Cambridge Mass., has compiled the materials for the course and the sheriff said his department purchased a set of materials as a display sample for $250. He I said if area school boards decide to ïntro[ duce the course it is hoped similar kits [ will be purchased by the school systems. Harvey said he plans to meet with I school boards in Anii Arbor, Ypsilanti, Willow Run and vülages throughout the county to present the program and ask for its adoption. "We would hope it could be started in the high schools and junior high schools. That's where it's needed most. It isn't a scare course. It's very practical. It's information from kids who have been on the drug route and are willing to talk about it," the sheriff said.
