School Supt. R. Bruce MÍPherson issued a statement concerning two emIployes of the school district that have come to public attention recently in regard to recent racial incidents at Huron land Pioneer High Schools. "Informal allegations have been directed against Mr. Ernest Gillum, a teacher at Huron High School, with regard to his actions in dispersing students engaged in a fight in the school. According to all information available to me, Gillum acted with utmost responsibility. When alerted to the fact of the incident, he moved quickly into the area, along with the principal and other staff land faculty members, and begin separating students. A number of students were involved in the fighting. None of the adults present had time to do more than to move quickly to part the students. It is difficult if not impossible to observe niceties under such circumstances. Until I have facts to the contrary, I will continue to assume that Gillum was doing his duty. I commend Paul Meyers, principal, and every other adult who pitched in to bring the situation under control. "Mrs. Shirley Gulley, a human relations workers from the Office of the Human Relations Ombudsman, was arrested at Pioneer High School last week on a charge of obstructing and interfering with a pólice officer. I did not witness her arrest nor do I have all of the facts of the matter before me. "Several points must be stated. Mrs. Gulley's job is in part to serve as an advocate for students. I am convinced that she was attempting to do just that. Her innocence or guilt must be determined through the judicial process. I intend to give her the support I would any employee of the district under such circumstances, and I will be involved personally in this matter until it reaches a conclusion"
