Ammact betweerr the Ánn Arbor Board of Education and the Principáis Association was approved by the board last night. The new two-year agreement calis for a total economie increase of 4.87 per cent, retroactive to Nov. 15, for 67 principáis, assistant principáis, department directors and assistant directors. The 4.87 per cent increase includes increment, fringe program and salary increase, School Supt. R. Bruce McPherson said. Highlights of the new contract are a substantial improvement in fringe benefits and the adoption of an evaluation instrument which will serve as a basis for performance evaluation, McPherson said. McPherson characterized the bargaining process with the AAPA as "excellent" and termed the increase a reasonable one. Paul Banninga, principal at Carpenter and Meadowview Schools and president of the association, described the settlement as "realistic and appropriate at this time." He indicated agreement with the inclusión of an evaluation instrument, and explained that the administration and association share responsibility for refining the process in subsequent years. Banninga, who defined his organization as the "middle management" of the school system, headed the negotiating team for the AAPA. Deputy Superintendent Fred Holliday and McPherson represented the administration during bargaining.
