For the Ann Arbor Public Schools, the winter weather brings the possible threat of cancellation of classes. Severe conditions closed the schools last on Jan. 29, 1969, for the entire day. According to Robert Syers, Ann Arbor Public Schools director of transportation, several methods are used to assess the road conditions for school cancellation. "We call bus drivers in outlining areas for their ,1-eports, then we contact the County Highway Department by radio. Further information is also obtained from the Sheriff 's Department and the State Pólice, along with the Weather Bureau." The transportation director and the supervisor of schools then must decide if the schools should be closed. And their decisión must be reached by 6 a.m. in order to notify news media before 7 a.m. The announcements of school closings are repeated until 8 a.m. and the cancellation of public school bus service will affect all public school buses for the total school day. School closings also affect all school-related programs and facilities, but plans for evening programs in recreation and continuing education are announcéd separately. Should school closings be required during the course of j the school day, the decisión will : be conveyed to building administration from the central i office. If buses operated in the morning, they will be used again to transport pupils home ind parents will be informed by radio. School staff members are not sxpected to be present when school is closed, excepting those members of the operational staff who carry special severe weather assignments.
