General, mechanical and electrical contracts totaling $4,399,000 for construction and site developmen t of Ann Arbor's fifth junior high school were approved last night by the Board of Education. This is some $46,000 under estimates calculated last year by a Royal Oak consulting firm. The low general construction bid was awarded to E. E. Kurtz Construction Co. of Ann Arbor for $2,850,000. John E. Green Plumbing Co. of Detroit received the nod for its low mechanical bid of $1,033,000. Kent Electric OF Ravenna, Mich., was awarded the electrical contract for its low bid for $516,000. Sooren Gozmanian, plannerex p e d i t e r for the public schools, says he expects work to get under way on the school, to be located at Nixon and Bluett Rds. on the city's northeast side, as soon as the weather permits. The per square footage cost of the fifth junior high, based on the three main contracts, will be $29.72. This compares with $21.95 per square foot about four years ago when bids for Scarlett Junior High School were approved. The fifth junior high will be essentially the same design at Scarlett. There was a total of 10 general, six mechanical and eight electrical bids. A bond issue of $4,950,000 to cover all costs of construction, equipment and furnishing of the fifth junior high was approved by the voters last June. It is hoped the building can be occupied by February of 1972.
