I f Ann Arboi4' School Trustee Cecil W. Warner requested last night that alï secondary school teachers be required by the administration "to particípate in supervising the lavatories " Warner's request will be put on the agenda for further discussion. Warner tentatively recommended such a step several weeks ago in an attempt to cut down the number of assaults and incidents in the secondary school restrooms, and was told by the president of the Ann Arbor Education Association (AAEA) that his interpretation of the teachers' contract is that no teacher can be forced to patrol the lavatories. Warner commended those teachers who have volunteered in the past to patrol the lavatories and said a "teacher 's responsibilities extend far beyond the classroom . . . you cannot avoid interacting with the students in non-academie and difficult situations. "Our children must know what is acceptable and what is not. They must know where the limits are and that you as teachers and leaders, not brothers or sisters, intend to see that the limits are honored. This is part of the career you have chosen. As a professional educator you should know this; as a layman, I shouldn't have to teil you," Warner told the teachers. "It is time that the AAEA leadership guide its professorial types to leave their lofty perch and not be afraid to get their hands dirty. Too many of our teachers are committed to the curriculum and the contract and not to the child and what's best for him." Warner said he recommended required lava-' tory patrol by secondary teachers because he does not believe the voluntary cooperation of a few teachers "will be sufficient in magnitude to provide adequate safety to our students and protection to the property in our lavatories. Purther, I do not feel that a few should be asked to do the job for the total." School Supt. W. Scott Westerman Jr. reported recently there have been seven verified physical assaults and many verbal intimidations, plus vandalism, in the seeondary school lavatories since September. Westerman said he thought voluntary teacher help in patrolling the lavatories would be sufficient, however.
