A "fairly heavy" voter turnout for the annual Board of Education election was reported at 11 a.m. this morning. By that time, 2,969 v o t e r s had been to the polls to electL three candidates to the school I board and decide the f ate of the school district's operational tax levy of 11.66 milis. School officials predicted that the sunny w ther would bring out a large number of voters to the polls. An estimated 16,000 voters are expected. This is about 40 per cent of the registered School District voters, who number about 40,000. Voters need not be propertyowners to vote for the school board candidates or the millage. The voting breakdown, by precinct, was as follows: First Preeinct, 335; Second, 400; Third, 366; Fourth, 634; Fifth, 600; Sixth, 232, and Seventh, 402. Voting turnouts for the school district's last millage elections - 5V2-mill increases earmarked for teachers' salaries which were defeated on May 8 and again June 12, 1967 - we r e also quite heavy. Eight candidates are seeking three seats in today's election. They are Richard M. W o o d, Duane A. Renken, Cecil W. Warner, William C. Ayers, Mrs.j Joan C. Adams, Ted Heusel and incumbents Dr. Harold J. Lockett and Mrs. Francés M. Felbeck. Mrs. Adams' first name was ncorrectly listed as "John" on he voting machines early this morning. The polls opened at 7 a.m. Mrs. Adams' name was printed correctly on the absentee baltlpts. Polling places, which were listed in Saturday's editions of The News, will be open until 8 p.m. today.
