Mrs. NancyíH. B rus sol o today announced her candidacy for the Ana Arbor Board of Education in the June 14 school election. She is the first candidate to announce. She issued the following statement: "Setting priorities for the Ann Arbor School District is a challenging task in the current economie climate, especially when community voters express differing views on the best marnier to use the funds available for eduation. No single board member can totally represent the opinions of all the district's voters. But each trustee must work to ensure the best possible educational experience for each student in the district's schools. "I share the frustrations of many dedicated teachers and administrators who are faced, daily, with the problems in our schools; I share the concerns of parents for their children's safety and well-being. I believe that respect for school rules and regulations and the property and rights of others is essential to a productive school environment. But this respect can only be learned when administrators, faculty, students and parents respect one another as worthwhile human beings who have individual, unique contributions to make to school life. The promise of this prospect a productive school environment - motivates my decisión to seek election to the Board of Education. "Objective criteria to evalúate pupil performance in basic skills and to ensure accountability for this performance must be clearly defined by the board. Our schools are making progress toward individualizing instruction and in using a variety of learning materials. The system should continue to benefit from the assistance of paraprofessionals and volunteer aides and tutors. "The educational leadership and expertise available in Ann Arbor must ' - assume a more active role in Lansing, not only to secure fair state tax reform, but also to influence curriculum and policy decisions which could drastically affect our local system. Many segments of the community must be involved in planning future and evaluating present personnel, programs and policies. This should include participation by students, especially at the secondary level, and by youth who have left or completed school in order to gain insights from their recent perspectives." Mrs. Brussolo has served on the Parent-Teacher Executive Boards of Bader and Tappan Schools, was secretary of the Parent-Teacher Legislative Committee, was a member of the group which formulated the "Humaneness in Education" report, and is active on the League of Women Voters; Education Committee which compiled "Know Your Schools." She received a BS degree in speech from Northwestern University in 1952 and an MA degree in secondary education from the University of California at Berkeley in 1964. Mrs. Brussolo and her husband, John, manager of Design Engineering for Applied Dynamics División of Reliance Electric Company, live at 1540 Roxbury Rd with their three sons who are students at Huron, Tappan and Bader Schools.
