THE Michigan$ducátion ASsdciation, which keeps tabs on these kind of things, reports that Michigan voters so far in 1972 have approved a total of 62 millage proposals for school operations and turned down 43. It is far too early in the year to take any comfort from that track record. Statistics only teil part of the story; 62 wins and 43 losses are only the top of the iceberg. For example, of that 62 figure a whopping 54 were for millage renewals. Requests for additional millage won eight times. In t h e loss column, 16 were for renewals and 27 for additional millage. I The only real hard-and-fastl conclusión one can make is thatl the voters are more or less willing I to continue paying taxes at thel present rate, but they do not want to vote themselves higher taxes. And that's understandable, because property taxes are plenty high already. It will be interesting to see the MEA's tote sheet at the end of the year. But by that time, the campaign to limit the tax on real and personal property to be levied for school purposes should have borne fruit. The times are more than ripe for the occasion.
