Editor, TliNews: The League of Women Voters of Ann Arbor supports: the city millage proposal . . . The 1.7 millage request by the City of Ann Arbor is needed to jeduce.the present deficit and meet inflationary wages increases. While inflated property values have resulted in increased revenues, fixed operating costs and wage increases have risen at a faster rate and new funds are needed to meet previous levéis of service. Although the 1.7 mijls will not produce sufficient funds to provide the level of service the League of Women Voters would like to see in many areas such as park development and maintenance, long-range planning and human service programs, the League urges voter support for the city proposition to prei vent further drastic cuts in city services, j the school millage proposal ... The additional 1.3 milis for school I operating funds are necessary to balance I I the proposed 1974-75 budget which estiI mates an increase of 9.3% in revenue I lagainst a 12.13% increase in 1 I tures. The proposed budget attempts to I I meet inflationary increases and to offset I I budget cuts made during the past two I I years. Some priority programs are to be I reinstated, or more adequately supportI ed. In addition, the proposed budget 1 eludes a 7.7% salary increaSeTW schoor I district employees. While not restoring I all the programs Ann Arbor has had in I the past, League members view the 1 tional 1.3 milis as necessary for the Ann I Arbor Public Schools to continue a 1 ity school system. Voters should be reminded that tax 1 bates to senior citizens and to othersj whose property tax is high in relation to I their income now makes the property tax I less regressive than it has been. For 1 ny taxpayers this means that 60% of the I additional cost of the millage would bel returned to them by the state. The League of Women Voters urges your YES vote on BOTH The city and school millage proposals on June 10.
