[ George M. wnght, a service' engineer ■ with Ford Motor Co., is a candidate for I the Ann Arbor Board of Education. The I election is June 9. He submitted the following statement: "My wife, Ruberta, and I have lived in I Ann Arbor for 30 years. Our five children I have gone through the Ann Arbor school I system and graduated from Pioneer I High School. We presently have a f son in the Ann Arbor schools. . T "I have attended Henry Ford 1 munity College, Wayne State University, I and the U-M Engineering Gradúate I i School. I have been employed for the I past 18 years by Ford Motor Co. as a I I Service Engineer. I "I am a member of the Society of I I Automotive Engineers and am a Past I iMaster of Ann Arbor Masonic Lodge No. I 1 544. I have been affiliated with the Boy I I Scouts as a Neighborhood Commissioner. I "I would like to serve on the Ann ArBbor Board of Education in' a manner that Bwould help to restore the public's confi■tience that their tax dollars are being Bspent wisely, and to help return the Ann ■ Arbor schoolsystem to the elite status in B which it once was held. I 'in talking to voters and taxpayers; I Ifind that many people share my feeling I that too much time, effort and money is I being inefficiently spent on nonI educational functions. If this is true, I then tbe board must reverse the trend; if I it is not true, then the board must conI vince the public otherwise. "I am totally opposed to secret board I meetings in which actions are taken that I involve the use of public funds. While I such actions may well be legal, they cerI tainly do little to develop the confidence ot-tne puDiic in ine Diñara - i ininK inis is important. This lack of public confidence in the board is reflected in the renMtid Hifeatynnmage proposals. "The present board has unanimously voted to request an additional 1.5 milis I am not convinced this is necesary While it is true that inflation is taking its toll, it is also true that our property is regularly being reappraised upwards, an action which should take care of inflation. This regular upward adjustment of property values plus a millage increase wreaks "doublé jeopardy" on citizens, especially those on fixed incomes where there are no escalator clauses, cost of living allowances, etc. "In summation, I am concerned about the education of the children of Ann Arbor and about the wise and prudent use of taxpayers' money in achieving those goals." Wright, 51, lives at 2035 Miller Ave.
