Nancy Romer Burghardt, ar 25-year-old gradúate student in education and psychology jat the University is running for the Fifth Ward City Council seat on the Human Rights Party ticket. In her opening campaign statement, slie says: "I am running for City Council en order to offer a real alternative for the people in the Fifth Ward. My political and personal development as a woman has made me more sensitive not only to the plight of other women, but also to other oppressed groups such as blacks, chícanos, and youth. I believe in the importance of self-determination for all groups. "I am committed to the principie of community control of all public services. "My past experiences have itaught me that people must govern their daily affairs and cervices in order to be proud pi themselves and their comtnunities. I am committed to kvork for the following free or ttow-cost community conpolled services: health care, child care, schools, housing, drug help programs and lolice. I strongly support instijtutions such as Main St. Community Center, Free People's Clinic, etc. It is the city's responsibility to provide, expand, and fund these types of services for all citizens, but these services must be community controlled. i "I will work toward establishing community control of the pólice forcé. The pólice spend too much time and pnoney harrassing blacks and young whites. They do not adequately protect or patrol the black community and they [fl_jTOt_ade_quately investígate or professionally handle the victims of rape cases. Community control boards could drastically increase the number of blacks and women on the pólice forcé and could improve pólice policy. "We see the elderly as vital and interested citizens. We do riot view anyone as too young or too oíd to particípate in a government w h i c h affects their daily lies. We will work for a shuttle bus for people living in the two senior citizens co-ops around West Park to attend City Council and school board meetings, and other events in the city. Presently, the Ann Arbor Transit System does not adequately service either the back or elderly communities in the Fifth Ward. Dial-a-Ride should immediately be expanded to the low-income areas of town and bus service should be expanded so that all people may share in the recreational facilities of the city. "I am committed to helping working people in their struggles for decent wages and working conditions. I have joind in strike support activities with groups such as the Buhr Machine Tool workers, the Ann Arbor Education Association, AFSCME, and the Commission on Professional and Hospital Activities. I will work for a strong anti-strikebreaking ordinance. "The Human Rights Party, with a strong and concrete platform, aims to become a new, revitalizing force in Ann Arbor. As a candidate I do not simply represent my own opinions but the politics of a party of committed community people with a clear visión of the way this city should be run. We urge you to begin to join the movement for new politics in Ann Arbor and in the state. We urge you to reject voting for the 'lesser of two evils.' We in the Human Rights Party hope to ioin together with you to change the political face of Ann Arbor." Nancy Romer Burghardt says she has been a teacher in East Harlem in New York, and in Willow Run, a welfare worker and Peace Corps volunteer. She has been an organizer for the Ann Arbor, Tenants Union, Women's Liberation Child Care A c t i o n Group, and the coördinator of . the Human Rights Party.
