The picketing was called off yesterday afternoon after the preliminary examination i n District Court of a freshman charged with inciting a riot. During the examination, District Judge Edward Deake took under advisement the motion of Robert L. Smith's attorney that the charge be dismissed. Deake said he will rule March 19 on the motion of Attorney Kenneth Cockrell of Detroit, who questioned on the stand pólice officers at the scène o f last Thursday's demonstration. Cases of 12 students charged] with conspiracy to cause a disturbance were adjourned by Deake yesterday until March 26. Most of the students have been assigned court-appointed lawyers. Meanwhile, a group known as the Undergraduate Alumni Association of EMU issued a statement in opposition to the recent demonstrations by students. A group formed to foster relations between alumni and the student body said, "The board feels that the leadership responsible for the action came from a group of individuals who were not acting in the best interests of the university community and the individuals involved."
