Tfie number of public housing units planned for construction in Ann Arbor dropped abruptly today from 151 units on nine sites to 126 units on eight sites. A decisión to pursue no further efforts to obtain a 4.5 acre site between Winewood and Thaler either by condemnation or cutright purchase, was reached in a oneand-a-half hour executive session of City Council late this morning. The city had tried since last July to obtain the site by condemnation. Late this week, the Housing Commission proposed outright purchase at $30,000, including about $7,000 in local money to supplement $23,500 available from federal sources. Housing Commission Chairman Robert P. Weeks said efforts will still be made to purchase the site for public housing. Contractor Aubra E. Sharp Sr. said he is ready to proceed next week with work on the 126 units still in the present program. Earlier, City Council voted, at Mayor Robert J. Harris' urging, to reverse a longstanding informal policy of allowing news reporters to attend City Council executive sessions on an off-the-record basis for background information.
