Gov. William GTMiffiken has appointed D o n a 1 d Cameron Smith, MD, professor of maternal and child health at the University, as his spécial adviser on health and medical af f airs. Dr. Smith's responsibilities will include planning and monitoring health resources for Milliken, as well as advising the governor on current and long-range policies leading to the development of a comprehensive statewide health program for Michigan. U-M regents have granted Dr Smith a six-months leave from the School oL Public Health and the U-M Medical School for this special assignment. . .. Dr. Smith will work with the state Departments of Public Health and Mental Health. As special health affairs coördinator, he will also work with such agencies as the Office of Comprehensive Health Planning reviewing the state's vari inus health resources. Smith tegan his medical career when he received his I MD degree from Queen's University (Canada). He later received a Master of Science degree, as well as a diploma in public health, from the University of Toronto. He h a s been certified as a specialist in preventive medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. His U-M association began when he received a fellowship in pediatrics from the Commonwealth Fund in 1952. Smith rose through U-M academie ranks from assistant professor of maternal and child health to full professor and then to chairman of his departroent, a position he has held since 1964. He has also been visiting professor at Harvard University. In non-academie posiüons in the health field Dr. Smith served as medical director of the Kent County (Ontario) Health Department and as Medical Director of the Michigan Cripplel Children's Commission. His overseas health m e n t s include consultation with the World Health Organization in the Middle East, Western Europe, South Korea and Israel. Responding to Gov. Milliken's request for special offcampus leave for Dr. Smith, U-M President Robben W. Fleming issued the following statement: "The appointment ot uonaia i Cameron Smith, MD, as I cial adviser on health and medical affairs to Governor Milliken is no surprise to the I University. F r o m his initial association with the University as Commonwealth Fund Fellow in pediatrics to t h e present, Dr. Smith has made steady and impressive contributions to the field of health care. Gov. Milliken's appointment is a tribute to Dr. Smith's professional accomplishments as well as to the University in its role in health programs in Michigan." Dr. Smith begins his duties in the Governor's Office about April 1.
