Pólice Chief Walter E. Krasny said today his department has stationed 10 uniformed officers on the University campus in an effort to "prevent trouble." "We're not up there to pepress anyone or to enforce University regulations," the chief said. "It's simply a precautiónary measure for the safety of those students who wish to attend classes, study or appear for job interviaws if that's what they want." The Arm Arbor officers are stationed in and around various buildings on the central campus and Krasny said they "are not spying or snooping on anyone. . . they're in plain sight . . ." He said in addition to tion of criminal violations his men are on the campus in an effort to neutralize what he called a "brewing confrontation" between student radicáis and other students who oppose the disruption of classes and barricading o f employment recruiters. "Many students, especially those in the engineering school, háve had it with these disruptions," the chief said. "They plan to handle the next one themselves and we don't want to see anyone get hurt, no matter how obnoxious is their conduct." He said his officers are on duty most of the day and night, and the cost of their pay will be a subject for negotiation with the University officials. Many of - the officers assigned to the campus are on overtime pay, working on their regular days off or over their normal tour of duty. The chief said the stationing of patrolmen on the campus will be taken under study in the near future to see if it is advisáble to make the arrangement permanent. Such a study will be made jointly by pólice, City Hall and University leaders, Chief Krasny said. "The last thing anyone wants is an armed camp," the chief said. "But apparently it's come down to either having pólice stationed on the campus or allowing the conscientious student to have his entire study program disrupted and ruined." -
