Chalmers ('Bump') Elliott, U-M associate athletic director, has been named by the United Fund Board of Directors as general chairman of the 1970-71 Ann Arbor Area United Fund campaign. He will organize and head an organization of over 3,000 other volunteers who this f all with seek to raise what probably will be Ann Arbor's first campaign to exceed $1 million to provide services by over 50 United Fund member agencies. Chris McKenney, newly elected president of the United Fund Board, said: "I know of no one who would give greater leadership and inspiration to all of us. Bump has the admiration and appreciation of all of us for agreeing to coach our United Fund campaign. It behooves all of us to volunteer to play on his 1970-71 United Fund team in whatever volunteer spot he chooses to use us." Robert Kerschbaum, executive director of United Fund, added: "Bump is the kind of a persons everyone wants to work with. Hal Raimo and I, and the entire staff of United Fund look forward to the opportunity of helping Bump to raise more dollars than ever before in Ann Arbor's United Fund history." In accepting the job, Elliott said: "The United Fund goal is an all-out championship game where the opportunity for Ann Arbor is great. The stakes are high, and we must win. To win requires that we prepare now in recruitment of the best manpower p o s s i b 1 e . We n e e d dedicated .volunteers to sign up throughout our new organization and I welcome these offers beginning now." Ann Arbor's fund-raising record in meent campaigns has been among the best in the nation. According to a campaign performance study based on 1969 figures and made by United Community Funds and Councils of America, the Ann Arbor Area United Fund has exceeded the average increase in giving to United Funds nationally over the past several years. Ann Arbor's per capita performance nationally in 1969 was second only to Rochester, N.Y. Of cities raising between $500,000 and $1 million, Ann Arbor had the highest per capita giving record. Of 23 Michigan United Fund or ty Chest communities, Ann I Arbor rates first with the next five cities in this order: Midland. Saginaw, Detroit, Kalamazoo and Ypsilanti. In the recent communication I from United Community Funds and Councils of America, it was stated that the Ann Arbor campaign is outstanding. United Fund Board members, however, are anxious to not be complacent and United Fund officials agreed that United Fund can't rest on its record for there are many more waiting to be helped, and that United Fund has never yet raised all the United Fund dollars to do all that needs to be done. This year's campaign will be held in October. Elliott, who is well-known I both locally and nationally, was I head coach of the U-M football I team from 1959 to 1968: He has I had the distinction of both I ing on and coaching Big Ten and Rose Bowl Championship teams during his career as a Wolverine. In 1947, he led Michigan to the conference and Rose Bowl championships as halfback on Fritz Crisler's eleven. In 1964, he coached Michigan to the same accomplishment. Elliott has served on many professional a t h 1 e t i c committees, and has been a staff member of many football clinics th.roughout the United States. He ie a staff member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletics Camp, and director of the summer youth sports clinic of Ann Arbor. He is a member of the Executive Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He and his wife Barbara have three children.
