Leap-year hop at the town hall Thursday eve, Jan 19. Many loads of wood in town at $2.25 to $3.00 per cord. A few boys and girls engaged sleighs, picked up loads, and rode out to Hathaways, last Tuesday evening. Prof. Swift, of Rochester, will give an exhibition of the power of the microscope and telescope at the town hall, Friday and Saturday evening of this week. It is for the benefit of the school library. The Western Washtenaw and Eastern Jackson fair association met at Chelsea, Jan. 20 and elected the following officers for the ensuing year: President, J. V. N. Gregory; Vice-Pres., E. A. Nordman; Secy., Jas. L. Gilbert ; Treas., H.8. Holmes. Much complaint is heard among the pupils in this vicinity of the treatment received by the pupils of the high school from their teachers, such as depriving them of the intermission during both forenoon and afternoon, which is allowed in other schools, and expelling pupils from the school for the slightest offence. The following instance is given, one pupil accidentally hit the arm of another, the former instantly begged to be excused, using the words "excuse me." The offender was immediately expelled by the principal of the school.
(From another Correspondent). D. B. Taylor was in Detroit on legal business last Monday. R. M. Congdon of Grand Junction, Iowa, is spending a week with relatives here. Rev. W. S. Sly has been called to minister for one year at the Congregational church. The young people have been improving the sleighing with several sleigh rides recently. The Aetna Insurance Co. paid Recreation Park Association $200 last Saturday, for the loss on their stables which were burned last fall. Charles Steinbach has built a very fine ice sail boat which will soon be launched on some of the lakes near here. Business is lively now with the good sleighing and many logs have been delivered at Lighthall's saw mill this week. Mrs. E. A. Avery, of Grand Junction, Iowa, arrived here last Saturday with her two children to spend the winter. The creamery, the Chelsea house, and several persons have filled their ice houses this week, with excellent ice 16 inches thick from Pierce's lake. Olive Lodge, F. A. M., went to Grass Lake Wednesday night last week and had a very pleasant fraternal meeting closing with a banquet. The hardware firm of Woods & Knapp has been dissolved. Mr. Knapp continuing the business at the old stand. They have been together fourteen years. They are going to have a library in the public school here and to raise money for that purpose they have two microscopic entertainments at the town hall, Friday and Saturdays nights.
