Cornelius Sullivan, a miner, aged 47, dropped dead on the street at Terre Haute, Ind., and it was afterward discovered that Saloonkeeper Davey, of Roseville, Ind., had kicked and beaten him the night before. Davey has been arrested.
James H. Vardley, who disappeared from Milwaukee three years ago with $5,000 of his wife's money, was found and arrested Thursday in Louisville, where he was about to marry again.
Charges of bribery, soliciting bribes and conniving to aid saloonkeepers in evading the liquor laws have been filed with Governor Luce, of Michigan, against Prosecuting Attorney Sani D. Clay, of Kent county, preferred by Chief of Police Smith, of Grand Rapids.
In a row among Hungarians at Spring Garden, Pa., Saturday night, two men were shot, one of them fatally. Constable John T. Stauffer, who attempted to make an arrest, was badly cut with a hatchet.
The county treasurer of Carthage, Tex., was murdered in his room by being knocked on the head and having his throat cut. The assassins then forced open the county safe, took $5,000 in money and made their escape.
A young man of 19 named Hacker, of Danville. Ills., shot and killed a young lady of 18 named Steike, of Belle Plaine, Iowa, at the home of the latter's grandfather at Berlin, Wis., Monday night and then shot himself. It was the result of unrequited affection.
