Preferred Apples To A College
â– Abont a century ago, when the comrais8ioners who had in charge the selection of a site for Bowdoin college were attending to this duty, thej' pitched upon New Gloucester, Me. , as combining more advantages than any other place they had visited, bnt the owner of the land refnsed to part with it if it was to be nsed as the site of a college, thongh willing enough to sell it if it was to be put to any other use. The reason that he gave was that the students would steal the apples in an orchard in which he took great pride. So it seema that this is the reason why New Gloucester is noted for its apples rather than as beine the seat of Bowdoin college.-
