We are the Ship (the story of Negro League Baseball) by Kadir Nelson

"We are the Ship all else the sea", are the words of Andrew "Rube" Forster founder of the Negro Baseball League. He wanted Negroes to play in the professional leagues, and in order to do so, his teams would have to be faster, stronger and better. Kadir Nelson brings the reader into the story of the Negro Leagues from beginning to end using a personal narrative voice. His oil paintings illuminate the trials and triumphs of those brave men who played baseball simply for the love of the game.

For the Birds

As I drove home from work one day I saw a starling get struck by a vehicle. When I noticed that the bird was still alive and struggling to get out of the road...I had to help. After catching the bird I contemplated what to do next while I comforted the bird and marveled at her beautiful iridescent feathers. I remembered once hearing of a place in Washtenaw County to go for help with injured birds, so I drove back to the library to get more information. After some excellent work on behalf of the information desk I had the number for the Bird Center of Washtenaw County. What a relief when the bird center staff answered my call and quickly directed me to their location near central campus. They met me at the door and took the bird into care. There is no fee for the service but donations are welcome. We left our number with the center and asked them to keep us updated. Although the starling didn't make it, I was glad that her last hours were in a warm comfortable place with good care and no pain. What a good thing the bird center is! Although some folks might be happy about one less starling.

It's Summer Reading Time

Are you ready for summer reading? We are! Register online or in person at any of our locations beginning Friday, June 13.
This year's theme is "Under Construction" and we have fun planned for all ages. Everyone is invited to come hear the exciting West African Sounds of Like Water Drum and Dance at the new Traverwood Branch, July 6, 2:00-3:00 p.m. Adults who really want to stick to the theme can learn about Creating A Green Home in a presentation; by Michael Klement of Architectural Resource, LLC; on green building strategies, July 30, 7:00-8:30 at the Malletts Creek Branch. Children are invited on July 19, 2:00-3:00, to the Pittsfield Branch, to make their own monster trucks by re-using common household items. Or participate in our summer contests! Teens, come get your game on high tech and no tech throughout the summer.
Whether you want to learn; play; hang out; or find new books, magazines, movies and music; you can do it at AADL this summer.
