Cling not to earth - ihcre's nothing tliorc, Ho wever loved - however fair, Butin its features still must wcar The impresa of tnonality. The voyager on the boundless deep, Within hia barque may sniile or ilcep - But bear him on - he will not weep To leave its wild uncertainty. Cling not to carth- as wcll wo may Trust Asia's serpent' wanton play, Tliat glitters only to betray To dcath- or else to miscry. Dream not of Friendship - therc may bo A word, a amile; ngasp for thee - Cut wait the hour of need. and seö - But wonder not- tlieir fallacy. Think not of Benuty- like the rest It bears a lustre on its crest - TSut short the time ere stands confest lts falsehood - or its frailty. Then cling no more so fondly on The flowers of earth around thee strown - Tlwy'lldo awhile to sport upon But not to love so fervently.
