Improvement In Mills
- An Englishbaker and miller has invented a contrivnnce to prevent thn heat ing of milistones in grinding grain. An exchange has the following notice of it. It usually happens ihat, nfier working tor a lew houw, the stoncs becomo heated by the constant friction ; tliis heat ia eommuiiioutcd to the grain, and risc-ston cerlain steam or moisture ; and the moistened material adhering to the stones lessens the friction, causu:g themili to slop. Heating alono, without ráfsirig a moisture, isalmost equally detrimenlal ; and any way, ordinary grinding is imperfect vvlÃere ihere is a grcat deal to be done. No plan has proved so eÃFectual for remedying this defect as one - the subject of a patent - in this establishment. - From n small fanner like apparatus, moved by n belt from the engine, a stream of co'd air is conducted in tubes to tbc interval between the stonos (the a'dmission being by orifices whicl perfórate ihe lower stone,) and by this sühple and nerfectly inexpensive annngementtlio npparatus isaUays keptcool and workable. The mili may go iflcessantly lor uvelvc'monihs, and vet it will be in asgood order at the end as at the begining. Mr. Carr says that, by this coninvanco alone, he could grind l.is meterÃais at ti shilling a bag lower than any miller using a common apparatus is fit to do. He employs fonr sets of stones, and the quantity of wheat ground by hi.no annually produces lf0,000 stones of flour, or about 8,000 bags, all of which are baked into bread and biscuits within the premises." OTho Maryland election is representcd to have re9ultcd favorably to the Whigs.
