Description

‘Irving Pond described the sculptures in the April, 1920 Michigan Alumnus as part of the building and ‘not additions for mere ornament…The Athlete looking off toward the field, the Student gazing toward the campus are men, fully developed men, and not college boys; thus, the figures suggest the wisdom and desirability of carrying on…the normal functions of study and recreation, work and play into and throughout the period of active life.’

Apparently, the Pond brothers identified closely with these figures.  Irving Pond wrote, in a footnote, that they represent brothers ‘in one of whom the mind of the scholar is ever fresh, and the other of whom is still an acrobat of no mean accomplishment.’’
