A Piece of History: Richard M. Trenton, 10-year-old fifth grader at St. Thomas School of 5125 Jackson Rd., Scio township, holds a scrap of old newspaper found inside a pillar in the church by workmen who are refinishing the entire interior of the building.

Six Decades Later: These chunks of plaster (above), removed from the pillar (below), at St. Thomas Catholic Church during a current renovation project, have revealed aspects of life in southeastern Michigan at the turn of the century. The papers were used to hold wet plaster in place on the columns when the church was built. The exposed steel grillwork of the pillar is seen in the picture below.

St. Thomas Remodeling: A two-story scaffold has been erected in St. Thomas Catholic Church for use by painters. The church is undergoing extensive remodeling that is expected to be completed sometime in August.
