ANN ARBOR'S FLOWER SHOW IS OPENING: The sunshine of last week opened in broad smiles the crocuses all over town. The cluster above, nestling in a corner of the garden of Prof. and Mrs. Dwight L. Dumond on Morton Ave., is one of the earliest each year. It signals the opening of the grand parade of blossoms in Ann Arbor gardens, the flower show that is not limited by the acres in a display hall nor by the dates of a program, but one that will bring joy for the next six months to everyone on the street and that will be climaxed by the all-city show to be held the second week in June.

BEAUTIFUL CORNER - Loveleen Bajwa, owner of the Raja Rani Indian Cuisine Restaurant, 400 S. Division St. in Ann Arbor, tends to her garden located in front of the restaurant. Bajwa was recently honored by the Ann Arbor State Street Area Association for beautifying the corner of Division and William streets with her garden that includes climbing roses, morning glories, petunias, geraniums and herbs. 'If everyone would take as much pride about their property in the city as she has, Ann Arbor would sure be a beautiful city,' says John Purkiss, State Street Association vice president.

Oh the Flowers that Bloom in the Fall: Edward R. Schlanderer, 727 Miller Ave, rubbed his eyes, but they were still there- the four blossoms on the French lilac bush in his back yard. A 78-year-old retired cabinetmaker, Mr. Schlanderer's hobby is flowers, and in all his experience he has never seen a September-blooming lilac, nor, for that matter, has he ever heard of one. The blossoms first appeared a week ago.

Oriental Arrangements: Prof. Pearl Hsu of 2180 Medford shows off some of her oriental flower arrangements at an exhibition at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens, 1800 N. Dixboro Rd. Prof Hsu teaches oriental flower arrangements at the Women's City Club. For the past two summers, she has been teaching East Asian art at Elmira College in Elmira, N.Y. The arrangements will be on display at the Botanical Gardens throughout this month.

QUIRK GARDENS BEING CLEANED UP: Ypsilanti Kiwanis Club members yesterday launched a three-day work bee to restore former large landscaped gardens at the rear of the city's Quirk Home building (top rear), where Municipal Court and other city offices will be located early next month. The garden area, below the large house which the city recently purchased, is fenced and on the same level as the adjoining Riverside Park. Kiwanians working at the site yesterday included (left to right) Samuel W. Walthour, the Rev. William R. Shaw and William C. Durant.
