Crowds Throng To Fire Scene: Screaming fire engines and smoke belching from the Capitol Market, brought quick crowds of onlookers to the curbs at E. Washington St. and S. Fourth Ave. yesterday afternoon. Cause of the blaze, which left an estimated $30,000 in stock, fixture, and building damage in its wake, is unknown. It started in the store's basement and was discovered by James B. Thompson, proprietor, just before 4 o'clock yesterday.

At The Height Of The Blaze: Its awning name-lettering almost obscured by the smoke-clouds rolling from its blown-out windows, the Capitol Market at 123 E. Washington St. suffered a $30,000 fire shortly before 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Although the cause of the blaze is undetermined, James B. Thompson, proprietor, who discovered the fire, said it apparently started near a basement ice machine. Fed by escaping fuel gas, the flames raced up through the flooring into the street-level vegetable department and destroyed food stocks across the ground floor. Yesterday's was Ann Arbor's most major fire since the Wild & Co. blaze last December. (Story on page 13 and pictures on pages 13 and 22).
