DOWN BOUND: Ann Arbor's recent snows have been just what the children ordered - particularly in view of the fact that public schools have not been in session the last half of this week. This happy trio is set for another glide down a Nichols Arboretum hill. Left to right they are Bruce Walker, 11, of 22 Harvard Pl., Suzan Nichols, 10, of 503 Elm St. and Martha Payne, 9, of 245 Orchard Hills Dr.

HE GOT HIS CHANCE: Ann Arbor News Chief Photographer Eck Stanger has been taking pictures of the tulip tree in the front yard of the historic "Kempf house" at 312 S. Division St. just about every spring for years. "I've always wanted to photograph the same tree in the winter with snow on it," he said today, "but never did until this morning." Here's the result. The snow-laden tree is just about as lovely now as it is when in full spring bloom.

City Rinks Do Brisk 'Business'. A brisk but sunny weekend brought thousands of Ann Arborites out to city ice rinks. A survey of the rinks showed what some city officials called near-capacity crowds - and some skaters found it to be too crowded to avoid colliding with each other. The ice surface was generally good, in view of the short buildup time.

Wins News Trophy Race: Much in evidence in Saturday's All-City Skating Meet finals was 14-year-old Dave Dingman (center), who is shown making a turn en route to his victory in the special 440-yard speed trophy race sponsored by the Ann Arbor News. The son of Dr. and Mrs. Reed O. Dingman, 1407 Lincoln Ave., young Dingman also won the 100-yard obstacle race, another 440-yard speed race, and led a winning 800-yard relay team.

'SNOW FOOLIN': Neighbors shivering this weekend weren't surprised at all to see "Eskimos" frolicking in an igloo in the yard of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Johnson at 1401 Red Oak Rd. Three of the five snow dwellers, who are also amateur construction engineers, peer from their handiwork above. Left to right are Philip, Jotham and Marjorie Johnson, aged 11, 6 and 8, respectively.
