LOOKING AHEAD: Minnesota's Gophers were distinctly underdogs in the football theme of University of Michigan students' homecoming displays. Students looked ahead to Jan. 1 in this one outside South Quadrangle's Gomberg House at 600 E. Madison St. Symbolic Michigan fans awaited the arrival of the stork, hopefully expected to bring a bid to the New Year's Day Pasadena Rose Bowl game.

State St. The display, part of traditional homecoming festivities, paraphrased Shakespeare's MacBethian witches with "Double, double; toil and trouble, Minnesota burn, Michigan bubble."
