Pair Honored For Service - Mrs. Luella M. Smith, Washtenaw county clerk since 1939, and the Rev. C. W. Carpenter, pastor of the Second Baptist Church from 1929 until his retirement on his 80th birthday yesterday, today received the first American Bar Association Liberty Bell Awards at the Law Day ceremonies in the Washtenaw Circuit Court. Circuit Judge James R. Breakey Jr. (right) presented the plaques on behalf of the Washtenaw County Bar Association. The award was established by the ABA to recognize efforts of non-lawyers to uphold the law. Judge Breakey commended both Mrs. Smith and the Rev. Mr. Carpenter for "service a long way beyond the call of duty." He told Mrs. Smith "you have guided us as lawyers and judges through the years and I was happy to see you advanced early in the days of having a woman in a high position." He called her the "most efficient county clerk in the state." He said the Rev. Mr. Carpenter's "work in human relations has stamped your position as one of the great service in the community."
