Holiday Crafts - During an open house in the very American setting of Ann Arbor's historic Kempf House, people representing different nationalities demonstrated through crafts and other means how Easter and Passover are celebrated in other lands. Blanche Ehrenkreuta, a Polish American, demonstrates cutout decorations. Americans of German, Ukrainian, Italian, Greek, Irish and Jewish backgrounds also took part in the event, sponsored by the Ann Arbor Multi-Ethnic Alliance.

Double Dividend - Louisa Pieper examines flowers on the magnolia tree in front of Ann Arbor's historic Kempf House on 312 S. Division St. The tree usually blooms just once -- in early spring. This year, passersby have been startled to note the tree is in flower again. A horticultural assistant at Matthaei Botanical Gardens who has seen the tree in bloom speculates that because the entire tree is not in flower, the blossoms are the result of left over buds that simply were not mature enough to open in the spring. These buds, however, did continue to develop throughout the recent warm weather until they eventually opened.

Floral Beauty - The Kempf house on Division Street, an architectural gem in Greek revival style, was built in 1854, but its old-fashioned garden goes back only to the 1940s. Before that, the garden area was occupied by a driveway and carriage house, and was overlooked by a livery stable and a hospital. Today the garden is maintained by volunteer Marvin Pettaway and the city's Parks Department -- a colorful collection of roses, peonies, lilacs, bloodroot, delphinium, iris, day lilies, trillium and many annuals.
