Firemen mounted on ladders and armed with hose lines fight the flames that raged uncontrolled for more than an hour shortly after noon today at the Montgomery Ward Co. Farm Store building. Huge clouds of multi-colored smoke attracted thousands of spectators. One firefighter was injured. The picture was taken by News Photographer Irma Barnard.

Part Of Crowd That Watched Blaze: This general view of the fire which badly damaged the fourth floor of the Montgomery Ward Co.'s farm store yesterday afternoon shows firemen manning hoses from the ladder truck with part of the estimated 3,000 crowd in the foreground. The smoke billowing in the air could be seen over the entire downtown area. Firemen were hampered in their efforts by exploding sporting ammunition which went off in the heat of the blaze.
