Demolition of the old City Hall building, 218 E. Huron St., is under way, with workmen tearing out the interior. The old building was constructed in 1908 and served as the City Hall up until April, 1963. The picture at the right [this photo] shows the interior of the former City Council chamber with considerable ceiling debris on the floor. At left is the entrance, hallway and stairs. The old City Hall will make way for a modern five-story office building and restaurant. The building was purchased for $125,000 and the new office building is expected to cost more than $1 million. Completion date for the new building has been set for Jan. 1, 1966.

Old downtown structures are giving way to demolition experts. The 61-year-old former City Hall (above) [this photo] is on its way to "ground zero" and will be replaced by a $1 million-plus office building five to seven stories high. Meanwhile, a block west at E. Washington and S. Fourth Ave., demolition work (below) is under way to remove from the scene several old commercial structures. They will be replaced by a six-level, 250-car carport. Plans have been forged by a Detroit group to build a $4 million, 13-story hotel adjacent to the prospective carport, on the old Allenel Hotel site.
