Scaramouche was a stock personage in old Italian comedy, a merry fellow, at once a braggart and a coward. The first piece of this Suite might be regarded as a character sketch of him. The second piece has the character of a berceuse, and the Finale is based on a popular Brazilian dance rhythm, the Samba, which attracted Milhaud during a visit to Brazil.
