PROGRAM NOTES
Grosses Amen..........Olavsknaben
The "Great Amen" written for nine parts, opens and closes all concerts of Olavsguttene, the Singing Boys of Norway.
Star Spangled Banner......John Stafford Smith
Ja vvi elsker dette landet .... Norwegian National Anthem
Misere mei Deus........Gregorio Allegri
Written for nine parts, this work has been performed through centuries in the Sistinc Chapel in Rome, every "Good Friday." It has become famous because the young Mozart transcribed this work from memory after hearing it in Rome. The performance of this work was forbidden by the Pope outside the city.
Rex tremendae majestatis, from the
Requiem Ave Verum Corpus . . Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
0 Jesuslein zart, dein Kripplein ist hart . . Johann Sebastian Bach Little Jesus, Thy cradle is hard.
Exultate Deo.....Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina
"This five-part motet," writes the Palestrinian authority Raphael Casimiri, who is the musical director of the Latin Choir in Rome, "is renowned for the remarkable mastery of Polyphony." The transcriber has imitated the nature of the original antique manuscript and has brought the orchestral colors of trombones, harps, and tympany through the grouping of human voices.
The March of Sinclair........Edward Grieg
Based on motives of Norwegian folksongs, this composition describes the march of the invading Scottish troups, under Colonel Sinclair, through the old and well-known Gudbranda Valley. The Norwegian peasants had hidden themselves high up in the mountains on a pass. A young farmer's girl, called Pillar Guri, stood on the highest peak, holding guard. When she saw the troups coming, she blew her horn loudly. The peasants threw big pieces of rock down the mountain and the avalanche destroyed all of the Scottish soldiers. In the composition one hears Pillar Guri blow the horn and the avalanche comes rolling down.
Pianist: Melvin Simonsen
Romance in D..........Joh. Svendsen
Svendsen was the second greatest composer of Norway, and was conductor of the Royal Danish opera in Copenhagen at his death. He is known internationally and his violin "Romance" has become well known throughout the world. Violinist: Eivind Bull-Hansen
Rex Olavus gloriosus......From the Middle Ages
The Holy Martyr, King Olaf, from whom the Olaf's Boys Choir takes its name, was slain in battle in Norway in 1030 by Stiklestad. Through centuries people have prayed to him as a saint and thousands have made pilgrimages to his tomb in the Cathedral of Nidaros, where, according to legend, many miracles have been performed.
I Himmerik (In Heaven).......Edward Grieg
This, Grieg's last work, was written a few days before his death.
No livnar det i lundar.......Ludvig Lindemann
Spring chorale: Now, all forests are in bloom.
Ku baane (Calling the Cows).....Norwegian Folksong
From the Norwegian high mountains the dairy maids in their little hut call the cows in the evening.
Soloist: eleven-year-old Pelle
Ola Glomstulen.........Folk Dance Song
This work is a Norwegian jest and dance song, written in dance tempo. Ola Glomstulen is the Norwegian Peer Gynt, who is always bragging, though he has nothing to brag about. He begs his mother to arrange a big wedding, to prepare wonderful food, and to brew beer.
Hear My Prayer........Felix Mendelssohn
From the Psalms of David, this hymn was written for Jenny Lind. King David and his warriors are lying in the battlefield surrounded by the enemy, they are afraid and call for help. King David prays to the Lord that he might have the wings of a dove so that he could hide himself in the desert.
Soloist: Arvid Aasen

Exidtate Jubilate.....Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
