SERENADE
Choreography by George Balanchine Music by Peter I. Tchaikovsky
Costume Design by Karinska Lighting by David K. H. Elliott
Of this ballet, Balanchine has written, "I choreographed to the music with the pupils I happened to have at a particular time. Later ... I elaborated on the small accidental bits I had included in class and made the whole more dramatic, more theatrical, in synchronizing it to the music with additional movement, but always using the little things that ordinarily might be overlooked. . . . Many people think there is a concealed story in the ballet. There is not. There are, simply, dancers in motion to a beautiful piece of music. The story is the music's story, a serenade, a dance ... in the light of the moon."

INTERMISSION
THE MOOR'S PA VANE
Variation of the Theme of Othello Choreography by Jose Limon
Music by Henry Purcell
Costume Design by Pauline Lawrence
Lighting by Nicholas Cernovitch
Arranged by Simon Sadoff
This ballet takes its theme from the basic plot of Othello, which is told com?pletely within the form of the dance. Here is portrayed the tragedy of Everyman when he is caught in the pattern of tragic living. The ballet is therefore timeless in its implication.
