Mr. Ricci's violin is a 1734 Guarnerius del Gesu, formerly used by the great Bronislaw Hubermann. It is known as the "ex-Gibson," since it once belonged to George Alfred Gibson, the 19th century collector and violinist who served as music director for the coronations of England's Edward VII and George V.

About the Artist
After SO years of concertizing (his musical debut took place in New York's Mecca Temple in 1929 at age nine), Ruggiero Ricci is universally acknowledged as one of the prominent violinists of the twentieth century. With over 4,000 performances behind him, he has appeared with virtually every important concert and radio orchestra of the United States and Europe, made 13 tours of South America, been five times to Australia, and three times to the Soviet Union. His recordings number over 500, a discography unequaled by any other contemporary soloist. In addition, he is a leading teacher of a new generation of violinists at New York's Juilliard School.
Tonight's concert is Mr. Ricci's third in Ann Arbor--he first performed in 1930 (one year after his New York debut) at the May Festival with Frederick Stock and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and more recently in 1971 with a recital in the Choral Union Series. He is artist-in-residence this week at The University of Michigan, where he will teach twice-daily classes at the School of Music.
