Pilobolus Dance Theatre was founded 12 seasons ago by Moses Pendleton and Jonathan Wolken, who had met in a dance class given by Alison Chase at Dartmouth College. Taking its name from a genus of phototropic fungi, the group is known for its energy, originality, and its unusual way of working: Pilobolus choreographs most of its pieces collectively, without an artistic director. This collaborative process has proven to be the creative mainspring of the group.
Pilobolus is the recipient of many awards and numerous commissions, among them new works choreo?graphed and performed for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. For television, Pilobolus has filmed segments and features for Sesame Street, Dance in America, and for French, Danish, Canadian, and Bangladeshi national networks. The dancers have toured extensively on the entire American continent; in Europe, Scandinavia, the Middle East, and Japan; and the United States State Department has sponsored the Company in Portugal, Afghanistan, Spain, and the Indian subcontinent. Most recently, Pilobolus played to soldout nouses for four weeks at New York's Anta Theatre.
The group first performed in Ann Arbor in 1983, returning now for two performances in the Ann Arbor Summer Festival.
