Description

Nearly identical photo published in October 30, 1937 edition of Ann Arbor News with the following caption: "For A Better Ann Arbor" These boys beside the fireplace at the YMCA are absorbing lessons looking toward sound, healthful citizenship. The YMCA is among the 11 social, relief, and character-building agencies that are aided by the Ann Arbor Community Fund. The Fund provides 36 per cent of the total YMCA budget. The remainder comes from fees paid by members. The YMCA provides a recreation center for boys and young men, offering facilities for gymnasium sports, swimming, social games, reading, and music. It organizes boys and young men into clubs for fellowship and service. It offers a free employment service to boys and men. It gives vocational and life guidance, through interviews, conferences, and discussions. It is a natural information bureau, for young men coming to the city. It maintains a floor of residence rooms for single men, with low rentals. These rooms often are made available to stranded transients. The YMCA operates a high standard summer camp for boys at cost. It provides a meeting place for many Ann Arbor organizations aiming at general and social welfare. The Community Fund invites every resident of Ann Arbor to contribute. The general solicitation will be conducted during the coming week.
