They Top New Ann Arbor Draft List For Army

Serial numbers of these three men were among the first drawn in the second national draft lottery last night, placing them at the head of the list of newly-registered draftees in Ann Arbor. At the right is John A. Huston, 2507 Geddes Ave., whose number--196--was the first drawn. The second serial number drawn was 98, assigned locally to Melvin K. Bahnmiller, 522 Felch St., pictured at the left. Then followed several numbers above the total number of registrants here and the seventh number drawn was 39, placing its holder third on the local list. He is Arthur G. Shupe, 524 Elm St., center. Mr. Huston is now at the Racquet Lake Boys’ camp, Mr. Bahnmiller is employed at International Industries, and Mr. Shupe is employed in the kitchen of the West Quadrangle, University men’s dormitory.

Huston Holds First Number

197 Ann Arbor Men, 340 In County Assigned Draft Call Order

John A. Huston, 2507 Geddes Ave., and Chester A. Wolff, Saline, head the lists of new draftees for the Ann Arbor and Washtenaw county boards, respectively, because their serial number, 196, was the first drawn in the second national draft lottery within a year held in Washington, last night. Mr. Huston’s serial number is the next to the last in the city list.

There were 340 men in the county and 197 in the city who have become 21 years old since the first registration last Oct. 16 and registered in the two boards July 1.

Second man on the city list, whose serial number is the same as the one made famous by Tom Harmon on the gridiron last fall--98, is Melvin K. Bahnmiller, 522 Felch St. The third man on the city list is Arthur G. Shupe, 524 Elm St.

Mr. Shupe’s number was the seventh one drawn in the lottery, but because the intervening numbers were all higher than the number of registrants on the city list, he became No. three in the new group of draftees. Eight hundred numbers were drawn in the lottery.

Second man in the county list is Richard H. Fisher, 3000 Whitmore ; Lake Rd., and the third is Jack Gray, Ypsilanti. The latter’s number, 247, was the fourth drawn from the goldfish bowl in Washington.

The names of these new men will now be integrated by local boards among names of previous registrants. According to present figures, one of the new draftees’ names will be inserted after every twelfth name in the city list of men who registered last October.

In the county list, the new names will be inserted after every seventh name of previous registrants.

Draft board officials pointed out that although these figures indicate where the new men stand now in relation to all draftees, the figures may be changed slightly by late registrants in the new group and by elimination of men more than 28 years old if a bill to that effect passes in Congress.

An order list for both Ann Arbor and Washtenaw county, showing the order number and serial numbers for all men whose names appear on the two lists is carried on page 12. Order numbers which correspond to serial numbers as they were drawn last night also appear on the same page. The order list was compiled by The Ann Arbor News from lists of the draftees furnished by the two boards.
