Ann Arbor Area Servicemen Promoted

Lt. Col. Arthur W. Bromage

Headquarters of the European Civil Affairs Division has announced the promotion to lieutenant colonel of Arthur W. Bromage, former instructor of the political science department of the University. Lt. Col. Bromage, a graduate of the Army School for Military Government at Charlottesville, Va., left the University in January 1343, to enter the Army as a major. After instructing in military government at Charlottesville and later at Fort Custer, he was given orders for overseas duty and left the states last March. Mrs. Bromage is assistant to the dean of women at the University.

Maj. Harold A. Miller

Still attending to the wounds of his fighting companions in New Guinea, after seeing 32 months of duty in the South Pacific, Dr. Harold Miller, former Saline physician, has been promoted to the rank of major. After receiving the degree of doctor of medicine from the University in 1937, he moved from Ann Arbor to Saline where he practiced. In May, 1941, he was called to duty from the reserve officer ranks and sent overseas in January, 1941, where he was on duty in New Caledonia before being transferred to New Guinea. His wife lives in Saline.

Lt. Frederick W. Nimke

Chief of storage at the quartermaster branch. 808 Commonwealth, Boston, Mass., Frederick William Nimke, son of Will F. C. Nimke, 827 Brooks St., has been made a First lieutenant. Former University student, baseball player for the Oddfellows, and member of the Brotherhood of Bethlehem church, Frederick was in business with his father when he joined the service in July, 1942. Before going to Boston this June, he had been stationed at Fargo. N. D.; Winthrop, Mass., and Camp Lee, Va. His wife, the former Carol Bowen, of 1003 Brooks St., and their young daughter are with him.

H. Stratton Bull, Jr.

Graduation ceremonies held last month at Columbus, Miss., brought silver wings and a commission of second lieutenant to H. Stratton Bull, jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. H.S. Bull, of Arlington Blvd. The 21-year-old pilot is a graduate of University High school and attended the University for more than a year, where he was affiliated with Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. A member of the Air forces since November, 1942, he attended flying schools at Camden S. C., and Augusta, Ga., before going to Mississippi. At present, he is taking B-17 training at Hendricks Field, Fla.

Hugh Cooper, jr.

Weatlferman at Hamilton Field, Calif., Hugh Cooper, jr. now holds the rank of a second lieutenant in the Army Air Forces, having received his commission in meteorology from the University of Chicago this summer. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Cooper, sr., of 1522 Arbor View Blvd., he enlisted in the service and was called to active duty in March, 1943 while enrolled as a junior in the University College of Engineering. After six months training at the University of Wisconsin, he was sent to the University of Chicago to complete his work in meteorology before training further.

Capt. Arthur E. Ferguson

Hoping to be on hand when the American forces take over Tokyo, Arthur E. Ferguson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur G. Ferguson, of Ypsilanti, is still piloting his fighter plane in the South Pacific where he was promoted during the summer to the rank of captain. A former student of Michigan State Normal College and of Wayne University, he entered service in 1941 and was sent overseas in June, 1943, as a second lieutenant. With an Air Medal and two Oak Leaf Clusters to his credit, he now serves as flight leader for flight A of the 13th Fighter Command.

John McMaater, jr.

"If you think a football game is exciting, you ought to be out here where the boys play for keeps,” writes John McMaster jr., head of a flotilla in the South Pacific and husband of the former Josephine Alexander, of 324 Maynard St., who has recently been promoted to the rank of lieutenant, junior grade. Son of Lt. Cmdr. and Mrs. John McMaster, of Philadelphia, Pa., John was active in track and pole-vaulting and was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma at the University. Entering service in January, 1942, he has previously seen overseas duty in New Zealand.

Maj. Charles L. Brooks

A third overseas promotion was recently awarded to Charles L. Brooks, who has been in the South Pacific for 30 months now. Charles, who went overseas as a second lieutenant in February, 1942, is now a major with the ground crew of the Army Air Forces, and has charge of a group of engineers in New Guinea. Son of Mrs. Laura P. Brooks, of 829 Tappan Ave., he received his diploma from the University College of Chemical Engineering in 1938 and was employed by Gulf Refining Co., Pittsburgh, and Standard Alcohol Co., Chicago, before entering service in July, 1941.
